Shostakovich: Festive Overture

use alternate fingering if they help you get it up to speed. I'd suggest
practicing it both ways. You may find that one way works well for a while,
but the other may be better as your technique develops.

Snap down the fingers like a machine. Everything must be rhythmically
even. Be sure you are playing the articulation as marked, especially bars
3-6 of Rehearsal # 9. In bars 6 and 7 of Rehearsal #22, you may use 1st
valve for the concert G-flats, but in an audition situation (i.e.. playing
solo for a panel) the degraded intonation and tone quality may be audible
to the more discerning listeners. I prefer using the regular fingering
(2&3) unless the tempo exceeds Quarter= 1 80 (a tempo some conductors
exceed in concert situations). I suggest learning to play it both ways
in case the auditioner gives you a tempo faster than your personal limit
using the standard fingering.
